In the heart of Freetown, Sierra Leone, something truly remarkable happened on this year’s Day of the African Child (DAC) at the Connaught Hospital. Shalom Rescue Foundation, in a collaborative effort with the Counseling and Psychosocial Unit at Connaught Hospital, set out to make a difference in the lives of children admitted to the Pediatric Ward. This year’s DAC theme, “The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment,” served as the backdrop for a day filled with compassion, joy, and a commitment to safeguarding the rights of children in our rapidly evolving digital world.
The Digital Age and Children’s Rights:
As technology advances at an unprecedented pace, it is crucial to recognize the unique challenges and opportunities that the digital environment presents for our children. Nurturing Hope and Joy:
The day began with excitement as staff and volunteers from Shalom Rescue Foundation and the
The counseling and Psychosocial Unit set up colorful stalls filled with snacks, toys, and educational materials. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as children and their families gathered in the Pediatric Ward, their smiles reflecting the hope that this day brought.
Snacks for the Soul:
Nourishment is a fundamental right of every child. On this special day, children at Connaught Hospital were treated to a delightful array of snacks that brought comfort and warmth to their hearts. Toys for Imagination:
Toys are not just playthings; they are tools for learning, creativity, and self-expression. From colorful puzzles to interactive educational games, each child received a gift that not only brought joy but also promoted their cognitive development.
Empowering in the Digital Age:
In addition to providing snacks and toys, our event also emphasized the importance of educating children and their caregivers about online safety, responsible digital citizenship, and the vast opportunities the digital world offers for education and personal growth. Children received age-appropriate resources and guidance, ensuring that they can navigate the digital landscape safely and responsibly.
